Galleries

By Adam Lockwood

Over the past ten years, Portland has become a hub for artists of all kinds. Due to this major influx of painters, sculptors and the like, many art galleries have cropped up; add to this the Portland Art Museum’s many exhibits and collections and you have an art lover’s paradise.

Portland’s many galleries include: Alysia Duckler Gallery, (922 NW 11th Ave, www.alysiaducklergallery.com) in the Pearl district features local and national artists in a variety of media. In Northwest, Laura Russo Gallery, (805 NW 21st Ave, www.laurarusso.com) specializes in works by established and emerging artists from around the Northwest. The Shaffer Fine Art Gallery, (308 SW 1st Ave, www.shafferfineart.com) in Southwest offers original and limited edition sculptures and canvas pieces by internationally known artists. The newest outcropping of galleries, however, is located in the Alberta Arts District. This area is host to such gems as Talisman Gallery (1476 NE Alberta St, www.talismangallery.com) that is comprised of pieces by local cooperative artists, and Onda Arte Latina Gallery (2215 NE Alberta St, www.ondagallery.com) whose forte is Latin American art.

The Portland Art Museum, (1219 SW Park Ave, www.portlandartmuseum.org) which came into existence in 1892 is the oldest in the Northwest and boasts numerous collections. The American gallery is comprised of about 250 works and provides a chronological overview of the history of American art. Works from around the globe are also on display including an Asian collection which specializes in Japanese art from 1615-1868 and Chinese art from 57 C.E to the present. The permanent display of European art includes works ranging from classical to 20th century and most of the countries of Western Europe are represented.

The newest addition to the Portland Art Museum is the Jubitz Center for Modern and Contemporary Art. Opened in 2005 the Jubitz Center is the region’s largest source of modern art, contains over 400 works from the Museum’s permanent collection as well as special exhibitions of new contemporary pieces which are featured every year. Collections of Native American, Northwest, photography and silver art round out the selection at the Portland Art Museum making it a true asset to the community.
