Urban Furniture: Bringing Portland Home
By Nick Azer
While a furniture megastore like IKEA can be great, sometimes one needs something a little more personal, especially in a city with as much character as Portland. Every neighborhood in Portland has a home furnishings store that taps into the personality of the city, and of the store’s own neighborhood. Here are five examples with offerings that represent their own little local slice of Portland flavor:
Nob Hill/Northwest
Eclectic Home
Saving the planet, one dresser at a time. Part of a new movement to bring ‘green’ to your living room, most of the sustainable furniture here is made from recycled wood, sacrificing neither quality nor the environment in the process. Eclectic Home is the place to go to have style and conscience coexist peacefully in your progressively-minded home. 2259 NW Raleigh St, just north of the Streetcar line in Nob Hill.
The Pearl District
P.H. Reed
The spirit of the Pearl shines bright at P.H. Reed’s showroom. With a wide selection of decidedly cool furnishings, matched with available interior design services, you’ll have no trouble finding those last pieces of the puzzle for the perfect Pearl abode. 1100 NW Glisan, in the Pearl along the Streetcar.
North Portland
Altura
Originally founded in New York, Altura saw the light and is now Portland-based, with a state-of-the-art workshop in the heart of North Portland. With a large selection of handsome and stylish wood furnishings, Altura is a strong and refined way to go local with your living room. 3500 N Mississippi, just NW of the Legacy Emanuel Hospital and just NE of the Fremont Bridge.
Southeast Portland
Lounge Lizard
Tapping into the artistic flavor of SE Hawthorne, there’s a stroke of genius and a flavorful streak to everything in the store. Whether it’s a velvet couch, a retro coffee table, or some psychedelic wall art, taking home a piece from Lounge Lizard is sure to satisfy your inner cool cat. 1310 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Downtown
The Real Mother Goose
This centrally-located downtown gem offers the whole spectrum of “Fine American Craft”, from handcrafted wood rockers to the hippest of contemporary steel-and-glass icons, all alongside intriguing art pieces and other décor. There’s something for every urban home here, without that feeling of mass-production. Nestled in right behind the major MAX station at 901 SW Yamhill.
