Coastal Getaways

By Justin Valdivia

Oregon enjoys some of the most beautiful coast line in the nation. The pristine blue waters are accented by giant rock formations which seem to stand sentry over the shoreline. We have laws prohibiting everything from private beaches to the industrial off-shore shenanigans that are allowed by other states, making our coast among the cleanest and most accessible in the world. The best part for the confirmed city dweller is that there are great coastal destinations as little as an hour from Portland. Here are our picks:

Cannon Beach

Nine miles of walkable beach and incredible art galleries beckon urbanites to this spot year round. Located just south of downtown Cannon Beach is Tolovana Inn, a favorite lodging destination for more than 30 years. Tolovana Inn offers oceanfront suites, complete with cozy fireplaces, full kitchens, and stunning views of Haystack Rock, a north coast landmark. Astoria

The oldest settlement west of the Rockies, Astoria was founded in 1811. Full of culture, one can watch the sea-lions, visit the end of Lewis and Clark’s journey at Lewis and Clark Nation Park, or simply relax in this comfy nook at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River. Enjoy majestic views of the river and Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, from the cozy rooms in this hotel built on the former site of the Union Fish Cannery a full 600 feet into the river. Newport/Lincoln City

Two of the larger towns along the north coast are Lincoln City and Newport. Enjoy fresh seafood at one of many restaurants in either town, visit the Newport Aquarium, or just spend a day shopping (there is an abundance of quaint shops in Newport and several factory outlets in Lincoln City). A great place to stay due to its proximity to both towns is The Inn at Otter Crest. With condo style accommodations and unbelievable panoramic views of the ocean you can’t go wrong.
